Field notes

Largest island of the Dodecanese in the southeastern Aegean — closer to Turkey (16km) than mainland Greece. The Old Town inside the Knights Hospitaller medieval walls (UNESCO-listed) is among the most architecturally intact crusader-era cores anywhere in Europe. Rhodes Town and Lindos (60km south, with the Acropolis of Lindos) are the typical anchors. Same Greek DNV. The structural draws are the genuinely deep multi-cultural historical layer (Greek + Roman + Byzantine + Crusader + Ottoman + Italian — Rhodes was Italian-administered from 1912–1947) and proximity to Turkey for visa-resets.

Mediterranean (Dodecanese) — meaningfully warmer than the Cycladic islands because of the southern Aegean position (close to Turkey). Summer (June–August, 25–27°C average, peaks above 35°C) is hot and dry. Winter (December–February, 13–15°C average) is mild and the wettest stretch. Sea-water temperatures stay swimmable May–October.
