What it is

Tourist + extension is a popular alternative to DNVs in countries that haven't formalized digital nomad pathways. Most start at 30–90 days on entry and stack via one or two in-country extensions. Costs are low ($50–$300 per extension) and processing is fast (1–2 weeks).

Who it’s for

Nomads who want extended stays (3–6+ months) in destinations without a DNV, are hopping between APAC bases, or are testing a country before applying for a longer-term visa. Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, and India use tourist-stack as the de-facto long-stay path; many nomads spend years there without ever getting a residence permit.

Tradeoffs

Tourist visas typically prohibit local employment (foreign-client remote work is generally tolerated). Some countries (Philippines, Nepal) cap total tourist time per year (180–365 days). Banking and lease access is limited — no resident accounts, short-term lease only. Tax residency triggers at 183 days/year regardless of visa class, so plan for it. Border-runs to nearby countries are common to reset clocks.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which country allows the longest tourist-extension stack?

Philippines at 36 months from initial entry (with multiple BI extensions). Cambodia's E-class business visa is indefinitely renewable in 1/3/6/12-month chunks. Indonesia B211a maxes at 180 days per entry but supports unlimited entries.

  • Can I work remotely on a tourist visa?

Foreign-client work is generally tolerated. Local employment is universally prohibited. Some countries (Indonesia, Vietnam) have started scrutinizing long-stay nomads paying for local services with foreign income — be discreet about local-economy footprint.

  • How do tourist-visa extensions work?

Visit local immigration 7–14 days before your initial visa expires. Bring passport, proof of accommodation, and the extension fee. Processing typically 1–2 weeks. Most countries cap extensions at 1–2 (so 30+30+30 = 90 days max). A few (Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia) allow multi-year stacking.

  • Do I need a visa run?

Sometimes. Cambodia's E-class extends indefinitely with no run required. Indonesia B211a maxes at 180 days then needs a fresh entry. Vietnam's 90-day e-Visa requires leaving and re-entering for another stamp. Plan rotations with neighboring countries (Bangkok ↔ Phnom Penh, Bali ↔ Singapore).
