Best for: Bargain Schengen base, especially Sofia and Plovdiv.

Bulgaria joined Schengen in 2024 and overnight became one of the cheapest Schengen options — Sofia is roughly half the cost of Lisbon for a comparable lifestyle. There's no formal DNV; long-stay needs the D-visa and one of the residency categories (employed, self-employed, retiree). Plovdiv is the dark-horse city with a stronger café and culture density per capita than Sofia.

Visa story

Schengen as of 2024; long-stay D-visa for residency, no formal DNV.

How to enter Bulgaria as a digital nomad

The standard pathway for nomads moving to Bulgaria. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.

  1. Schengen 90/180 since 2024

Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area for air and sea borders in March 2024 (full land-border Schengen access pending). Most US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia passports get 90 days within any 180-day rolling Schengen window.

  2. For longer, apply for the D-visa

Bulgaria's primary long-stay path is the D-visa (long-stay visa) leading to a residence permit. Categories include self-employment, investment, family, and the special pensioner route. There's no formal DNV.

  3. Apply at the Bulgarian consulate

D-visa applications go through Bulgarian consulates abroad. Bring passport, criminal record check (apostilled and translated to Bulgarian), accommodation proof, financial evidence, private health insurance, and the application fee (~€100).

  4. Get the residence permit at the Migration Directorate

Within the D-visa validity, apply at the local Migration Directorate (Дирекция Миграция) for the residence permit card. Get an EGN (Bulgarian personal identification number) at the same time — required for banking and everyday transactions.

  5. Wait 30–60 days

Bulgarian processing typically lands at 30–60 days. The residence permit is issued for 1 year initially, renewable annually, with permanent residency available after 5 years.

  6. 10% flat tax — among the lowest in the EU

Bulgaria's flat 10% personal income tax kicks in at 183 days/year of presence. Combined with low cost of living, it's one of the most attractive EU tax-residency setups for active remote workers. Coordinate with a Bulgarian accountant before crossing the threshold.

Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the Bulgaria consulate before booking flights.
