How to enter Bulgaria as a digital nomad

  1. Schengen 90/180 since 2024

    Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area for air and sea borders in March 2024 (full land-border Schengen access pending). Most US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia passports get 90 days within any 180-day rolling Schengen window.

  2. For longer, apply for the D-visa

    Bulgaria's primary long-stay path is the D-visa (long-stay visa) leading to a residence permit. Categories include self-employment, investment, family, and the special pensioner route. There's no formal DNV.

  3. Apply at the Bulgarian consulate

    D-visa applications go through Bulgarian consulates abroad. Bring passport, criminal record check (apostilled and translated to Bulgarian), accommodation proof, financial evidence, private health insurance, and the application fee (~€100).
