Digital nomad guide to Ireland

Best for: Americans wanting English-speaking EU cover without the Schengen clock.

Ireland sits outside Schengen, which makes it the underrated reset card for nomads who're maxing out their 90/180 in Lisbon or Berlin — pop to Dublin or Galway for a few weeks and your Schengen counter pauses. There's no formal DNV and the long-stay routes (Stamp 0, Stamp 4) are aimed at retirees and skilled hires, not freelancers. Cost is high; treat as short-stay, not a 6-month base.

Visa story

90-day visa-free for many passports; no formal DNV. Outside Schengen.

Open the per-city visa cards on each city page for the specific income tests, durations, and program names. None of this is legal advice — confirm with the consulate before booking.

How to enter Ireland as a digital nomad

The standard pathway for nomads moving to Ireland. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.

  1. Check 90-day visa-free eligibility

Ireland grants 90 days visa-free on arrival to most US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, NZ, and Japanese passports. Confirm specific allowance with the embassy. Critical: Ireland is NOT in the Schengen Area — your Schengen 90/180 days don't burn here, and vice versa.

  2. Enter and use the 90-day stretch

Border officers stamp the 90-day allowance on entry. Carry proof of accommodation and onward travel — checks at Dublin (DUB) and Cork (ORK) are routine.

  3. Plan onward travel — Ireland is outside Schengen

If you're rotating between Ireland and continental Europe, you can stack Ireland's 90 days with a separate Schengen 90/180 — effectively doubling your European stay window. Most US nomads underestimate this loophole.

  4. For longer stays: Stamp 4 or Working Holiday

Stamp 4 covers spouses of Irish/EU citizens, certain employment categories, and the Critical Skills Employment Permit. Working Holiday Authorisation is open to citizens of 12 countries (US, Canada, Argentina, Australia, NZ, etc.) aged 18–35 — 12 months in-country with work rights.

  5. Get a PPSN for banking

Once you have residency status, apply for a PPSN (Personal Public Service Number) at MyWelfare.ie — required for opening Irish bank accounts, signing leases, and registering with the tax authority. Required even for short-term residents on Stamp 4.

  6. No DNV — Ireland's nomad path is informal

Ireland has no published DNV. Most nomads use the 90-day visa-free entry plus rotation through continental Europe. Long-term remote work in Ireland generally requires either Working Holiday eligibility (under 35) or employer sponsorship.

Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the Ireland consulate before booking flights.
