Best for: Nairobi as the East African tech-hub base.

Kenya doesn't have a DNV but Nairobi has built itself into the most credible East African tech hub — Silicon Savannah is real, and the coworking density in Westlands and Kilimani reflects it. Mombasa is the coastal alternative but the work infrastructure thins. Costs are mid-range Africa (cheaper than Cape Town, more expensive than Cairo).

Visa story

ETA (visa-required for most, easy to get); no formal DNV.

Open the per-city visa cards on each city page for the specific income tests, durations, and program names. None of this is legal advice — confirm with the consulate before booking.

How to extend your stay in Kenya as a digital nomad

The standard pathway for nomads moving to Kenya. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.

  1. Apply for the ETA before flying

Kenya's Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) replaced the e-Visa system in 2024 — required for almost all foreign visitors. Apply at etakenya.go.ke; cost $32.50 (with $1.50 service fee), processed in 1–3 days. Valid for 90 days from issue.

  2. Wait 1–3 business days for approval

Kenyan ETA processing has been smoother since the 2024 system overhaul. Approval comes by email — carry the printed authorization for border control at Nairobi (NBO) and Mombasa (MBA) airports.

  3. Enter on the 90-day allowance

Kenya grants 90 days per entry on the ETA. Border officers stamp the entry; carry proof of accommodation and onward travel. The ETA is multi-entry within its 90-day validity.

  4. For longer: Class N (Self-Employed) work permit

Kenya's nomad-relevant long-stay path is the Class N work permit for self-employed professionals — requires a business plan, financial statements, and a USD 1,000+ application fee. Approved applicants get a 2-year permit, renewable.

  5. No formal DNV but the Class N permit functions similarly

Kenya has no published Digital Nomad Visa as of 2026. The Class N permit is the closest equivalent and is the path most long-stay nomads use. Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kilifi attract growing nomad communities.

  6. Plan for tax residency at 183 days

Kenyan tax residency triggers at 183 days/year. Foreign-source income for residents is generally exempt under Kenya's source-based system, but the rules around digital services are evolving — coordinate with a Kenyan accountant before establishing tax residency.

Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the Kenya consulate before booking flights.
