Digital nomad guide to Chile
Updated May 2026
Mid-tier monthly
$1,840–$1,840
median $1,840
Best for: Santiago for stability + infrastructure; the most 'developed' South American base.
Chile is structurally the most-developed Latin American country — internet, healthcare, and bureaucracy work better than most of the region. There's no formal DNV but the Temporary Residency Profesional path is well-trodden. Santiago is the only real nomad city; Valparaíso and Viña del Mar are weekend-trip distance.
Visa story

Open the per-city visa cards on each city page for the specific income tests, durations, and program names. None of this is legal advice — confirm with the consulate before booking.
How to extend your stay in Chile as a digital nomad
The standard pathway for nomads moving to Chile. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.
Enter on a 90-day tourist visa
Most passports get 90 days visa-free on arrival in Chile (US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan all qualify). Some pay a reciprocity fee at the airport — confirm with the embassy before booking.
Extend once for an additional 90 days
One in-country extension is available through the Departamento de Extranjería online portal or in-person at any regional office. Costs ~$100 USD; processed in 2–4 weeks. Total stay 180 days from initial entry.
For longer stays, apply for Temporary Residency
Chile offers Temporary Residency through several paths: Profesional (degree + remote-work evidence), Mercosur (for Argentine, Brazilian, Uruguayan, and other Mercosur passports), or by Investment. The Profesional route is most common for nomads — apply at the Chilean consulate before booking flights.
Get a RUT for in-country residency
Once you have temporary residency status, register at the Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII) for a RUT (tax ID). Required for opening bank accounts, signing leases, and most services. Visiting nomads on tourist visas can also get a temporary RUT for short stays.
Track total time — stay disciplined
Chile's tourist-stack approach (90 + 90) is the most common nomad path, but border officers track repeated entries closely. Three back-to-back 180-day stays may trigger questioning on subsequent re-entries; plan a real gap before cycling back.
Plan for the 23-month tax residency rule
Chilean tax residency triggers after 6 months of presence in any 12-month period (different from most countries' 183-day rule). Coordinate with a Chilean tax pro before crossing this threshold — Chile taxes worldwide income on residents.
Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the Chile consulate before booking flights.
