Best for: Tax-conscious base — Panama runs a territorial tax system.
Panama's Friendly Nations Visa is the most-cited fast-track residency program in Latin America — clean income test, fast approval, path to permanent residency in 5 years. The territorial tax system is the structural draw: foreign-source income isn't taxed locally. Panama City is the base; Boquete and Bocas del Toro are the slower-pace alternatives.

How to apply for a Panama digital nomad visa
The standard pathway for nomads moving to Panama. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.
Choose your path — Friendly Nations or Short-Stay Remote Worker
Panama offers two parallel routes for nomads. Friendly Nations is for citizens of 50 designated countries (US, Canada, EU member states, Australia, Israel, etc.) and grants permanent residency directly. The Short-Stay Remote Worker visa is open to most nationalities and grants a 9-month visa renewable for 9 more (18 months total).
For Friendly Nations: prove $5,000 income or business activity
Friendly Nations applicants must show one of: $5,000+ in a Panamanian bank account; ownership of a Panamanian corporation with documented business activity; or a $200,000 Panama property investment. The economic-tie requirement is what triggers approval.
For Remote Worker: $36,000+ annual income
Short-Stay Remote Worker visa requires annual income of $36,000+ ($48,000 for families). Employment contracts, freelance invoices, or business statements all qualify. No Panamanian bank account or corporation needed.
Apply through a Panamanian lawyer or via consulate
Panama's residency processes are notoriously paperwork-heavy — most applicants use a Panamanian lawyer (~$2,500–$5,000 for Friendly Nations) who handles document apostille, government fees, and the in-country procedural steps. Self-applying is technically possible but rarely worth the friction.
Wait 30–60 days
Friendly Nations: 30–60 days for the temporary residency, then ~6 months for permanent. Remote Worker: 30 days online processing through Servicio Nacional de Migración. Approval comes via email; an in-person Panama visit is required for biometrics.
Register with Servicio Nacional de Migración
Once approved, attend an in-person appointment at Servicio Nacional de Migración in Panama City to register fingerprints, get the cédula (residency card), and activate the residency. The cédula is what unlocks bank accounts, mobile contracts, and most services.
Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the Panama consulate before booking flights.
