Japan's DNV launched in 2024 with a high income bar and a brutal non-renewable single-entry rule — 6 months, no extensions, exit and don't re-apply within 6 months of departure. Treat it as a one-shot experience, not a base, until they fix the renewal limitation. Outside the DNV, the Highly Skilled Professional visa and the Designated Activities visas are the realistic long-stay paths.

Visa story

Digital Nomad Visa launched 2024 (¥10M+ income, 6 months single-entry, non-renewable).

Open the per-city visa cards on each city page for the specific income tests, durations, and program names. None of this is legal advice — confirm with the consulate before booking.

How to apply for a Japan digital nomad visa

The standard pathway for nomads moving to Japan. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.

  1. Confirm the high income bar — ¥10M+ annual

Japan's DNV requires ¥10,000,000+ annual income (~$66,000 in 2026). One of the strictest income tests of any DNV — bank statements alone aren't enough; W-2s, employment contracts, or 1099 summaries need notarized Japanese translations.

  2. Get private health insurance covering Japan

DNV holders cannot enroll in Japan's National Health Insurance. Private coverage with at least ¥10M (~$66k) in benefits is mandatory — SafetyWing, Cigna Global, and Genki all qualify; budget travel insurance does not.

  3. Apply at a Japanese consulate

DNV applications go through a Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country. Bring the application, passport (1+ year validity), notarized income documents, the insurance policy, and proof of accommodation in Japan.

  4. Wait 4–6 weeks

Processing is consistently 4–6 weeks. Approval arrives as a Certificate of Eligibility, which the consulate stamps into your passport before travel.

  5. Enter on a single 180-day window

Japan's DNV grants ONE 180-day stay window in any 12-month period. There's no rolling-window math like Schengen — once 180 days are up, you must leave. Track with Nomada's Japan DNV Day Tracker.

  6. No extensions, no renewal

Unlike most DNVs, Japan's is non-extendable and non-renewable. To return, wait out the 12-month window and apply fresh. Plan exit logistics carefully — the visa was designed as a one-time "try Japan" experience, not a residency path.

Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the Japan consulate before booking flights.
